Mission: Oscar Snob 2011

I used to REALLY love going to the movies. I still do. But for some reason I don't go nearly as often as I would like. Not sure why...but its something I've been meaning to correct for some time. Because of my slacking over the last few years....I always feel really behind during Oscar season. I find myself in one of two situations for each category: 1) not having any favorite to root for, or 2) having only seen one movie and therefore (possibly) unjustly rooting for that one. And now, because of the two reasons above...I feel like I have less and less motivation to watch the Oscars each year. But I always think...."I really love movies...I want to be into this...I just wish I had an opinion."

I recently got lucky with a great deal on a few magazines (I promise this is related haha). To be specific (because its too great of a deal not to share) using some expiring airline miles, I managed to get a year of Time, Us Weekly, and Entertainment Weekly.......all for.........wait for it...........$2!!!

I expected to wait a while before my magazines started to arrive. To my surprise...I received my first issue of Entertainment Weekly last weekend! Knowing I would soon have 3 magazines to get through per week, I decided to get right to it during my commute to work. This week's issue was filled with Oscar buzz. But there was a particular list in that caught my attention. It sort of inspired me.

EW's 25 Movies You Need to See Before Oscar Night
  • The Social Network
  • The King's Speech
  • Inception
  • The Fighter
  • Toy Story 3
  • True Grit
  • Black Swan
  • The Kids are All Right
  • 127 Hours
  • Winter's Bone
  • The Town
  • Rabbit Hole
  • Another Year
  • Get Low
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Blue Valentine
  • Biutiful
  • Animal Kingdom
  • Waiting for "Superman"
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • Inside Job
  • The Illusionist
  • Tangled
  • Burlesque

Currently (although this will be out of date shortly) I have seen (and only within the last 1.5 months): Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, and Tangled (in 3D!). That is hardly enough to have any good opinions on Oscar night.

I've decided to make this list into a mission. I have about 50 days until the big show (Feb 27th). I am going to try to see as many movies on this list as possible before then. Join me if you like...but I will even brave the theaters alone if I have to. I am determined to be a (semi) "Oscar Snob" this year. I will have movies/actors/crew to root for...and with good reason!

Now I know this list will never be 100% completed. Why? Because some of these movies aren't in the theaters anymore...but they haven't listed a DVD release date so that I can Netflix them in time. Fear not! If they do come out they are saved on my Netflix queue and I have already edited my queue so that every one that IS available (or will be soon) is at the top. I plan on writing posts whenever I see a movie or two (I won't add spoilers...just general thoughts). You can keep track of my status here! (There is also a link to the page near the top of the blog). I think this will help me blog more often too!

I was searching for this list on EW's website and they don't have it published there...but a bunch of people are posting about it and I found past lists from a few years ago too. If this works out I will try to make it an annual Oscar prepping challenge! (I probably shouldn't get so ahead of step at a time Laura).

The mission is starting tonight and tomorrow. I already have The Kids Are All Right in the DVD player from Netflix and tomorrow a few friends and I are going to see The King's Speech! I am really excited about that one because I really love Colin Firth and well....the movie looks really good too. Plans are currently being made to see Black Swan this coming week! Look at that...I'll double my watch list in no time!

Sooooo which movies have you seen? Any opinions on priority?!?! Do you think there should be additions to the list?? Let me know in the comments! :-)

  1. I have only seen two from this list. But I have a lot of movie tickets to use. I enjoyed "The Social Network" Good Luck with your movie plan.
